Description

Store Skagastølstind (Storen, The big one) is the third highest mountain in Norway. Even though there strictly speaking is one route that does not require climbing (over Mohns Skar, but this requires long glacier crossing), most routes require climbing. It is therefore a "climbers mountain". Ever since its first ascent in 1876 by William Cecil Slingsby it has been intrinsically linked to norwegian alpine and mountaineering history.

As in all of Hurrungane, the weather is harsh as humid coastal air lifts up and cools into mist and rain.

Getting There

Most commonly approached from Turtagrø hotel through Skagadalen, over the Skagastølsglacier (crampons!) to the emergency shelter Skagastølsbu (1758meters, ca 3hours from Turtagrø). From here complex terrain to the top-crown, where numerous routes can take you to the top.

Can also be approached over Styggedalsridge, Skagastølsridge or Mohn Glacier, but these are all serious alpine routes.
