Sport in MN: 60M or 70M rope?

Hey guys,
I'm looking to buy a rope and I don't know whether to buy a 60M or 70M rope. I will primarily be using this rope in Minnesota and maybe Colorado. Any opinions? Also, where do you like to go climbing, both bouldering and sport.

A 60M is good enough for most of the climbing areas here in MN. The only place I know that it will not work for is Wolf Ridge (Mystical Mountain Zone) up on the Northshore (Tettegouche). I don't know about Colorado. Red Wing is sport. Every where else is top rope/trad.

Sport in MN is largely Red Wing and Sandstone. Which you like more is kind of based on your personality. Do you like choss more or broken ankles more? 60m is long enough to climb everything in either of those places. Colorado is huge and obviously some places a 70 would be better. Will you climb in such places? I dunno.

Oh yeah and there's willow river if you climb hard.

90% or so of sport climbs in Colorado can be climbed on a 60 meter, so only having a 60 on visits there would not limit you too much. I can't speak for MN.

That said, if you will be projecting/dogging a lot, it is worth getting a rope 10 meters longer than what you need. Dogging and short sport falls will tend to wear out the rope ends (~last 2-3 meters or so) more quickly than the rest fo the rope. When the ends get too raged, you can trim them, yielding a like-new (but shorter) rope with fresh ends. Problem is if you have a 60, and need a 60, one trim of both ends and you are down to a 55. If you need a 60, but buy a 70, the rope will last a lot longer (i.e. several cycles of trimming the ends) before it gets too short to be useful. I have a few ropes that used to be 70s, but after 5+ years of heavy use are now down to ~50 meters...I use them now at short sport crags.

Thanks Pontoon, I forgot about Willow and Sandstone.

Sweet! I'm from MN but I'm going to school in CO so I'll most likely end up buying a 70M first, considering that I can just trim the ends after awhile. Thanks for the advice guys!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
