Hello,

I'm from montreal Qc and I wan't to go climb in may at Indian Creek and Zion, but I want to know if it's going to be to hot? We also wan't to do a Stop at Boulder to do the Diamond, but I'm not sure if usually it has to much snow on it... If someone could respond to my questions it will be very appreciate it.

May in Zion can be pretty toasty, but manageable. I climbed two walls there 2 years ago in mid may. We carried extra water and broke the climbs up into two days. We fixed ropes in the morning or afternoon depending on the sun on one day, and then fired to the top on the second day. One benefit was that NO ONE else was there and with the shuttle system you have the whole canyon to yourself at night if you decide to bivy on the wall. But don't get me wrong, it was HOT.

A 2006 photo of me at the top of "Lizards and Scorpions with Blue Sky and Clouds on Tuesday" or some other crazy route name. Nice view from the rim though. Image by Joseffa Meir.

Expect the diamond to have at least water and ice from the melt/freeze cycles until July 4 or so. And then some climbs after that. In July 3, 1997 I crossed the traverse pitch of the casual route which was literally flowing with water to get to the drier upper pitches. Oh, then got hit by golf-ball sized hail.

Other alpine areas are more "in." I've done the Flying Buttress on Meeker and the Petite Grepon in late May on a good year. Both have good lines that get sun.

Zion? Early May- good typically. Late May- better avoid the sun unless it is an unusual year. I usually go to Zion in April and November, but have climbed there in June and in Dec/January as well.

Indian Creek is very managable, as you can "sundial" the walls accoring to what you want. Morning sun, day and afternoons shade, etc. But in reality it should be in the 70's or 80's in May. Again, depends if you are talking early or late in the month. I consider Sept-Dec and March-May prime time in the Creek.
