Is there a quicker way to get to IC from Vegas than the i15 to i70? I have been trying to piece together a route, I have not come up with anything that looks to be faster.

That brings back a funny memory for me...

I was living in Boulder at the time and posted an ad for anyone wanting a ride to Southern California. Well, this guy got in touch and off we went. I can't remember his name, but he had a strong British accent (Welsh maybe?) and I could only understand about one in ten words that came out of his mouth. From the best I could gather, he had overextended his Visa and was technically not allowed to be living in the U.S. but faced a huge penalty for going back to British soil, so he was just kind of moving around. Anyway, after studying the map for some time he declared that he had figured out a great shortcut through Utah! Well, to make a long story short, we ended up veering off I-70, driving through Capitol Reef on roads that progressively degenerated from highway to paved road and finally dirt cow trail. I recall going 70mph down a washboard dirt road for about 100 miles in my 1976 Toyota Chinook hoping to God to find a gas station or any sign of life whatsoever. We finally coasted into some tiny town on fumes around 2:00 in the morning. Our shortcut ended up adding about 10 hours to the trip. When we finally ended up in San Bernardino, the guy just puts on his pack, says "thanks for the ride" and wanders off into the forest. Ah, good times.

Oh yeah, my point...

There's no shortcut through Utah.

Taken 9/19/08; A beautiful September day to play in the desert. Temps are cooling!

Mojave National Preserve, here we come! ; )

Since you're my friend...

Before you decide to take any "cut-offs,"
just remember the Donner Party... O.K.?

Would you be able to eat your own nuts, or your big bro, if push came to shove?

If you have time to spare it really is kind of cool to hit Zion, drive up 89 to Bryce Canyon then go to Escalante and take hwy 12 up and over to Boulder and Capitol Reef. Then to Hanksville - maybe see Goblin Valley and the southern San Rafael Swell and on to Moab then Indian Creek. If you go to Hanksville, you could technically go south across the Hite bridge and around to Monticello. It's supposed to be about the same to the Creek from there. This all adds loads of time, however. It's just a cool way to see some crazy country.

It takes a lot longer, but I second this recommendation -- It is an incredible and beautiful drive. Just remember one thing... don't "skip" gas stations.

"don't "skip" gas stations."

No doubt. The only thing missing from the drive is a really great diner. It's a sacrifice worth making.

I always try to stop at the following:
Ruby's Restaurant in Bryce. There is a good little diner in Hanksville. Good Mexican place in the town next to Capitol Reef N.P.

I thought I should add another reason to take the scenic route through Utah: the Mesa Market. It's in Caineville, 35-40 miles east of Capitol Reef. Home of fresh brewed organic coffee, phenomenal cinnamon rolls and hearth baked bread. The owner is very active in preserving the natural resources of southern Utah and IMHO worth supporting. Regardless of route, enjoy your trip!
