What is the best trad/sport climbing destination in August in the Southern States?

Relaxing at the P1 belay of Fruit Loops at Rumbling Bald.

Just about any place is going to be pretty hot in August, but for trad, I'd go to Moore's Wall in NC or Sunset in TN. Moore's is north-facing; Sunset is west-facing so doesn't get sun til mid-afternoon. Linville Gorge is another possibility; slightly cooler due to altitude.

For sport, the choices are limited. Foster Falls in TN has decent shade so is somewhat bearable. I've not been to Red River Gorge (KY) so can't comment on how it'd be in August.

If you MUST climb in August (not recommended), try Ship Rock or Hawksbill.

How I Send

It's a trick question right?

The answer is, there is no best climbing destination in the SE during August.

I found Foster Falls to be the most tolerable - still hot, still humid, but a swim in the falls at the end of the day is nice...

Also, if you are in GA - LaFayette/Pidgeon Mountain - climb at Lost Wall. Before you get there, stop at Uncle Jed's Convenience Store/Headshop and ask where blue hole is - it is a mine shaft that hit a spring...the water is around 50F and the locals are always interesting.

I don't consider WV to be "Southern," but that's where I would go to clip bolts in the summer. As mentioned, the Red will be miserable, and tick and chigger infested. For trad climbing (other than the New), I'd consider Hawksbill and other parts of Linville Gorge, the N. Side of Whitesides (limited), the N. Side of Looking Glass and possibly Sunset or Moore's (earlier in the day). Moores and Sunset are at lower elevations. There are a few other areas, but you get the gist. Chosters will be a sauna (and it ain't that great). The Obed will really a tick bed (and too f-in hot).

Thanks for the input. I have frequented most day trip areas from Charlotte, so I'm looking for a good place to spend a 3-4 day furlough. Plans to the Tetons fell through so I'm looking for the nearest, coolest spot in the SE. Foster Falls sounds like a possibility. Thanks!
