Stef, What I heard was that the CCC turned it down. The reason given was that the current approach provides more of a wilderness experience.
Its not much of a wilderness experience......passing remnant logging debris, walking on old logging roads, passing new road development and planned home site, looking across at some sinfully opulant example of hideously conspicuous consumption in the way of some kind of mongo chalet-lodge residence. I made a wrong turn where the old rusty cable is located and walked up on a couple of fellas at a waterfall/swimming hole spot. Woodsy, yes.....wilderness, no
True, but one (not this one) could still get lost pretty easily.
We did the apporach in the snow in February...probably going to be much nicer, if less defined, in the Spring. The snow actually helped define the trails.
I agree that it gets screwy around the logging cable, especially on the way out.
Ben Faber- the Jennings family owns Lonesome Valley and I assume the lumber store too. Lonesome is currently being developed into a community of around 200 homes. There are plans for a spa, etc. The plans actually look kind of nice. The roadwork, etc is being well done. In short, it will be a nice place. Some homes are currently under construction, one at the base of Cow Rock. That is why it is doubtful, for the time being anyway, that any alternate bottom approach is feasible. The hike isn't all that bad.....
