Its not the food that keeps them alive its the damn work ethic. I have a friend whos grandfather smoked unfiltered cigs and drank a shot a day and it was when his doc told him to lay off that he quit and passed 3 wks later. As much as I hated growing up in the south I have to give it to the old school guys. Its the work till you drop mentality. Hog fat...hell it just adds flavor. Nothing like some grits and fatback. I read a study that elderly are far more heathy and live much longer if they have some focus like work, family or some other thing that drives them. Try getting married, working for something more than yourself or just climb as hard as you can constantly. Then check your cholestrol (did you spell that right?) and let me know how it works....wonder if it helps with liver disease?

Ike, are you refering to Hickory, NC? If so, I grew up really close to there and I know exactly what you are talking about. I got out of there back in 87' and never looked back.

I remember once while visiting back there I was at a K-mart and there was this little "foodstand" out front selling "fried dough". Everything pretty much revolves around eating there. They're planning dinner while eating breakfast!

BASE

In Texas at some of the gas stations, they have massive mason jars full of pigs feet floating in pink vinegar. And yeah, my grandparents in San Antonio(go Spurs!) are in thier 90's.

Enjoying the little things in life.

I would have never thought it would be so exciting to see our sunflowers sprouting up. It seems like just yesterday we planted the seeds.

(Taken June 30th 2008)

Mmmm...I've fantasized about cheese curds swimming, jumping around, and doing the dirty, dirty dance for me in a 365 degree F bath of hog grease, I mean GREEZE.

Because it tastes good! No big mystery there.

Unlike your dad, I have to watch my cholesterol, so I can't eat the stuff I grew up on anymore. But I still have to have me a nice, salty country ham biscuit once in a while! (if you don't know what that is, ask the guys who used to live in Hickory.)

Of course, the real reason for being in North Carolina isn't the food -- it's the fantastic climbing. I'm headed for Looking Glass tomorrow!

Man, you guys are all way off-topic, I mean nobody's even mentioned "Slow Ride".

saxfiend,
No doubt the climbing is awsome in NC. I found this one little crag near Taylorsville that was kick ass. Not much beta on it though. While I was on this one route I remember this one redneck yelling out his truck window "You stuupid sumbeach!!" I think it was called stoney face or something like that, small crag, easy access, wierd locals.

Well if your in Hckory stop by the ole "Coffee House" off of hwy 123(not a gourmet coffee shop by no means) and order up some grits and red eye gravy, mabey Flo could even spot you a cammel with your meal. You can even smoke while you eat. Brings a whole new meaning to "Smoked Ham"

I know exactly what all yall are talkin bout! I grew up in N. Wisco and it's the same way up there. Pig Fat Rules! Once I moved to CO I went from 215 down to a trim 175. Mom says I'm too skinny now! Oh well, I still eat momma's home made when I'm back there but it's a whole different (and healthier) ballgame out here.

Mr. Blake makes a great point though about the work ethic keeping them alive. My Grandma's been a chain smoker and alcoholic since she was 14. Now that she's quit smoking at 84 she's got all kinds of health issues. Do what works for you I guess!

In the rural south of the Czech Republic (Moravia), they slap lard on bread like butter and eat tons of fried dumplings. If they all were croaking at 35 with heart disease, you'd think somebody would notice. How about all the chichironnes (sp?) in Mexican food? Fried pork rinds have 0 carbs and may be the ultimate Tabasco Sauce transmittal device.

The real point is, ever been to a nursing home? I have absolutely no desire to see the north side of 70. Social Security and Medicare may still be around, but our children will paying taxes at 60% and probably will start hunting all of us like dogs. The idea of paying for a month of an ultimate dream vacation in return for checking out when its over is actually being floated the internet already. And another thing: there's the very real possibility that all these years of crimping and yanking (unprecedented in human history)will give us new dimensions in arthritis pain.

So, c'mon angina!

At least with arthritis you get good pain meds!! What do you get for a heart attack? Mabey a good service and some nice flowers? I'll stick with the pain meds!

Ike, I was just sayin' - tongue in cheek - that a coronary'd be better than really old age, so keep it up with cholesterol.

Whether or not high fat diets will kill you are purely statistical. The medical profession is always lumping things down to the lowest common denominator in terms of policy. Lots and lots of people have lived excruciatingly long lives eating fat and smoking. Jim Fixx ran 40 miles a day and ate trees, croaked over in his early 50's. They don't really know.

And besides, who's going to be shelling out $800.00 a month for your meds, hmmmm?

A good punch to the throat is also a valid option, here, in the southeast.

A few weeks back Newsweek ran an article about the composition of Twinkies. It seems that there are not only no organic ingredients; you even have some petroleum based compounds. The creamy filling is actually whipped beef fat, corn syrup and an emulsifier. Yum.

Out here in Vegas there's a whole 'soccer mom crawl' as the inflated chest "trophy wife" crowd makes a loop from Starbucks to Whole Foods to Boca Park shopping center to Kona Grill and then press repeat on the control panel surgically installed in the backs of their heads. It's pretty amusing to see someone buying organic food at hugely inflated prices when they're carrying a lethal dose of silicone in their chests.

On a related note, the 7-11 on Las Vegas Blvd and Warm Springs now offers, besides an open-air crack dealership in the parking lot, *sushi.*

Welcome to the twilight zone.

Mike in the walkoff corridor on The Pear.

wow, this thread made me a little homesick... for mama's fried chicken and turnip greens.

The food in the south may not be healthy, but dam it is good!

I also knew a guy that had his first heart attack at 34 and got bypass surgery, that probably wasn't very fun for him.
