Actually, WV seceeded from Virginia because culturally, economically and agriculturally, they were very different places. Virginia was a wealthy, richly agricultural region, while West Virginia was a poorer, isolated, mountain region. The Civil War only served to bring out what was going to happen anyway. Plus, people in WV fought on both sides of the war.

If you ask someone from WV, they'll say that The South starts somewhere around Summersville Lake, maybe even as far North as Charleston.

Alright, first I didn't say WV was the South. It is definitely red and hill billy but it ain't the south. Heck, I bet they make some fine shine up there. We can argue about KY, though. Now my point was the general vibe at the non-southern feeling crag. Which I have also noticed at the red.
