Personally, I don't think putting up fake bolts is funny at all. Considering the potential for access restrictions and gaper injuries the whole thing seems pretty stupid IMO.
If you are leading and you can't tell the difference between real bolts and hangers that are glued to the rock, you don't need to be climbing. I am pretty sure any compotent climber can tell the difference between the two.
What's next? People painting fake cracks on blank faces to lure unsuspecting hardmen to their demise? Sorry if anyone's taking this very seriously-the very idea cracks me up.
Is Easily Flakey in a bolting controversy? You've got to be kidding, we were novices when we led that route many years ago. I wouldn't exactly call it "R".
I remember being told a similar story about a joker who pasted a bolt hanger onto the rock just below the crux of Gill's Cheek (sandbag 11d/12a)at Devil's Lake, Wisconsin, an adamately anti-bolting area. (This was about ten years ago, if not longer.) In the story in question, supposedly the adhesive of choice was bubblegum, and a pissed off retaliator went to the trouble of rapping down with a crowbar with the intention of pulling the bolt, only to have it come off in his hand...
