Anybody been camped at Black Rock? Going there this spring. What's the deal. Any climbing there? How long does it take to get into the park from there? 20-30 minutes?

Racked and loaded... name that splitter behind me? Hint, its on Supercrack Buttress

More like 45-60 minutes to the main climbing area. And no significant climbing in the vicinity. Black Rock has a separate entrance into the park.

My family and I have stayed at Black Rocks a couple times when Indian Cove was full. Indian Cove definately has a nicer atmosphere and climbing available, but Black Rock is an OK place to stay. It does have flush toilets and water at central locations in the campground, if that makes a difference.

Does it? I remember the road dead-ending. We've always entered the park through the town of Joshua Tree. At IC, you can enter there or through Twenty-nine Palms. But even when we stay at IC, we drive into the higher park frequently. The main difference I see with these 2 campgrounds compared with those inside the main part of the park is the availability of reservations and water, and the convenience of supplies. Since we always arrive on a Sat, it's been nice to have a reservation.

I meant Black Rock IS a separate entrance to the park. You need to retrace your steps to enter the park proper. Like the poster above said, it is a dead end.
