Monty,

Thanks for taking this in your hands and opening this thread. I apologize for getting the debate started in the previous thread. I should not have shared my opinion, just the facts.

Anyways, anybody who wants to smear me here... go ahead.

Thanks

soloing is a personal choice... but the soloist needs to think of what would happen if something were to go wrong, i.e. what happens to their family and friends. thats my beliefs matthewWallace

Growing a winter coat in Red Rock Canyon- December...
IMO: An experienced climber who chooses to solo reminds me of some of the Cirque Du Soleil performers that do their dangerous acts with no fall protection. They're a unique breed, and as long as humans are still roaming around on earth, we'll continue to have these people around, and I'm sure they don't give a damn what we think of their choices in life, and I bet their families, and loved ones can't even stop them. Millions of people, for thousands of years have watched, and paid to see amazing, death defying acts, and will continue to until a meteor wipes us all out with no one to save anyone,(not a bad way to go). Dirty Gri Gri, or is it GiGi?

free soloing is almost like climbing without a rope: if you fall, you may die.

Free soling is like hot coffee before the McDonalds lawsuit. Now that they a have their coffee down to 185F a hot cup of coffe is more like roped soloing, you have a little more margin for error.

Get your metaphors straight!

Full disclosure, I am for hot coffee but not free soloing.

Unfortunately, a free solo climber died last week. (Lover's Leap)
Unfortunately, a roped climber died last week, too. (Cob Rock)

Last year, a roped climber fell 50 feet on Werk Supp and died.
Last year, a free solo climber fell 50 feet on Werk Supp and lived. (seriously injured, though)

I have been dropped on a gri gri.
I have been dropped on an atc.
I have never fallen while free soloing.

I have burned my mouth on hot coffee, hot chocolate and hot pizza.
I have been hit by a car while biking.
I have tripped and fallen on a sidewalk.

My point: Soloing is risky. Roped climbing is risky. Life is risky. If you don't take some risks in life you may miss out on some of life's greatest pleasures. Do yourself a favor. Go out and buy a "PAY ATTENTION". Take it with you everywhere and use it. Now, go out and have some fun, take some calculated risks and PAY ATTENTION.

My favorite part about soloing is doing it for the camera! whats the point of soloing something if people cant see how cool you are and how crazy it is. Monty
