Hi

i'm Marco, an italian guy that loves to sled on natural track, i don't know if this is a common sport on USA, i searched for some information on the web without success.

Well, i'm going to travel in USA and maybe find some track that can be sled, maybe someone can help me.

This is what i mean with "sledding", recorded last sunday on Dolomites (mountains between north of Italy and Austria)

Thanks in advance!

Can't say I've ever seen anything like that over here. We have alpine slides at most major ski resorts in the summer, but fat Texans are really the only people who do that.

Alpine slide

Maybe try skiing or snowboarding, or since this is a climbing site, swinging some axes?

Looks very cool! I've never seen anything like this in the US. I think you should start this sport here.

Love it! I wish they had that here in the US. That could be a great thing to revive some of the dead or dying smaller ski resorts in New England (like the one near Rumney). I am guessing you don't need it as steep as ski runs to still be fun

Years ago I saw a video and write up from some guy in the Adirondacks that would hike/climb the high peaks and do some pretty technical Sled descents. Maybe someone knows where to find that?

Door opens for a rant.....

Not at my ski area!

These bastards have signs saying :" must have lift ticket beyond this point", "no parking on road way", "trailhead closed", "no sledding allowed, turn around now", then they put up a map as to where you are allowed to walk on the mountain... or else [implied],

When you try to walk up the mountain out of the area a bunch of workers catch you and start talking like you will die and they will have the inconvenience of coming to rescue you (pretty cold up there bro). Shit show.

This is a National Forest, merely leased to the ski area.

I like your Italian sled though. Doesn't look like you will abandon it at the end of the day amongst all your new Target sweaters, Mcadonald cups and your dog's shit.

Sorry, I'm really not in a bad mood, just don't have a climbing partner today.

When I first read the this post, my though was, "Ha, sledding...". After watching the video, I have to say, that looks like a lot of fun!

Perfect for all the dust on crust we own around here, especially when the tiny little crap resorts are charging as much as some of the best ones in the west. It would be popular for sure, all of the sledding hills I have seen operating for profit look pretty lame.

We used to have some major battles on sleds BITD when nobody drove on icy roads cause nobody had 4wd.

Marco,

It's not likely an Americen ski area would have a maintained smash up derby sledding area like the one you show in your video. Too many lawyers.

There are some videos of people sledding (not a luge, like yours) on Mount Washington in New Hampshire. There's no lift so you're on your own to get to the top.

Problem is, sledding needs ice, or packed snow. You might check out snow kayaking. It's been turned into a Thing now, but started as a back country, go anywhere there's snow deal. Idaho guy who also did winter water kayaking.

My town had some closed streets, too. With what, 800,000 miles of forest service roads out there, this would be super fun! And, help out some dinky ski areas. Here, you'd have to get dibs before the snowmobiles, though.

To the op, hope you do find some place to play here!

thanks for the answers!

well, usually official race are on ice but normal sledding is on the compact snow, in Europe there are a lot of "refuges"

i don't know if the translate is correct and is the same meaning, a refuge is a place in the mountain that in summer can be reached by car or bike but in the winter there is the snow and with the snowcats the road is prepared by the refuge owner

the video i linked is about a ski-area with a sledding track but usually we go on the refuges walking (usually a walk of 2,5 - 3 hours) and after the (big) lunch we go down sledding

the beautiful thing is that you can reach this places in winter only walking and we love this, maybe this is not common in USA i guess

this is an example of my descent from one of this refuges:

this type of track are not prepared like the first video, is simply a normal road with snow, so is more dangerous because you have no protection on the corner, in fact in this video my friend go down out of the road :)
