The gang walking down the access road to get to Si...
This is a really unique climb because it is in a gully that has perfect straight up and down sides it almost looks like someone cut it with a giant saw. This climb is reliable and can be climbed when there is still water running, just stay to the right or left. If there is water running over the falls make sure you test the ice at the bottom first because you are standing over a small pool, don't fall through like we did.
Pitch 1: ( WI3 45 ft ) From the board walk, walk down over the frozen creek to the start of the climb. If the creek or the pond isn't frozen enough to walk on you can walk over to the left and start about 15 feet up on a ledge. Climb up until you reach level area that goes back maybe 50 feet to the start of the second pitch.
Pitch 2: ( WI3 50 ft ) Climb straight up the slot canyon to the top. There is a tree out to the right that has slings on it that you can use for an anchor and to rap.
The tree with slings on it works good if there is not water running and your not top-roping. If you are top-roping or there is water running you can continue up past the tree into a narrow slot where the creek goes back into the mountain. From here scramble up to the left, there will be a steel cable that you can use to help pull yourself up on. Now from this small ledge you can climb up another 7 feet up to a big tree that hangs out over the end of the climb making a perfect top-rope anchor. You can see the tree from the start of the second pitch. Climbing the last 7 feet can be a little sketchy.
Descent: There are no rap rings or trees to use as an anchor after the first pitch where you walk back the 50 feet so you can either walk off to the left or the right. If your facing the climb the right side is easier do walk down.
From Dingmans Ferry ( Intersection of PA-739 and US-209) go south on US-209 for 0.2 miles. Turn right onto Johnny Bee Mountain Road. From here the road forks, go left at the fork and travel another 0.5 miles from to the visitor center. This is considered to be the access road. This road maybe closed from time to time in the winter. If it is you just have to park at the gate and walk up the access road 0.5 miles to the visitor center.
From the visitor center head right and you will see a board walk path leading into the forest. Silverthread Falls will be the first water fall you come to. Climb over the railing and up to the start of the climb. To the left there will be an ice curtain named "Silver Sheet".
To see if the access road is open you can call 570-588-2435. They will be able to tell you if it is open and if people have been climbing there.
Standard Ice Rack, You might want to bring some extra screws because you might have to build an anchor for your belayer.
