Hi Geir,
I was at the gym tonight and discussing self rescue with my friend and I mentioned how amazed I was about the amount of climbers out there who have no idea how to help themselves in an sport which is highly dangerous. Sport climbing included. Climbing is so much more than climbing, it's about knowing how to deal the consequences of an accident.
For me, self rescue was one of the first skills I learned through the AMC in PHX and I am so glad for that experience and the AMC for offering the course.
Good for you for offering your skills.

Hey Peter!

Thanks for your thoughtful words and insight! I totally agree that self rescue skills are essential for climbers. Many of the these skills are also useful in day-to-day climbing. I have tried to keep the fee low so that anyone wanting to take the class can afford it.

This is a great service to the community and at an extremely generous price. Given your list of questions, you could ~double the current price and it would still be a good deal.

Some climbing friends and I had some fun puzzling over this rhetorical question from the above linked page: "13. While belaying a second to an anchor, could you set up a rappel and have yourself on rappel before your second arrived?"

We tried to imagine how and why one would do this, striking out in the area of it simply being a multi-tasking time saver.

This would likely come into play for getting down to an injured second when lowering them wasn't the best option - yes? (... or partially getting down to them if more than half a rope length below.) I see that answering Question #19 would likely include discussion of this.

Again - a great service to the community.

Hey Bill,

Sorry I missed your question, I was away for several days. Also thanks for your kind words.

To answer your question, one scenario that this skill might be useful is when bad weather starts moving in. Over the years I have had a few occasions where surprise storms roll in while a second was following a pitch. As you suggested, this skill is one way to begin a descent quickly.

I could also envision a scenario where your answer would be just as valid ... perhaps a second gets hit by a falling rock and you decide to rap down to them to see how bad the injuries are.

There are a few slots still available in the second class for those who are interested.

Hi Geir,

Thanks for the reply - plenty responsive! I tend to think of the exercise solely in terms of an injured second mid-pitch and probably high off the deck. But I do remember a time at J-Tree belaying up my partner with only a T-shirt on top ... very chilled from rain spatters driven by a building wind. The storm snuck up on us from behind the rock.

Best Wishes,
Bill

Took the last one despite 35 yrs. climbing. This old dog learned a bunch new tricks. Well worth a day of my time. If you do multi pitch routes or don't want to hang helplessly waiting for someone else to save your ass, take the class. I am in the process of trademarking that last phrase, so don't even think about it GH!

BTW
It is great to see so many friends taking the class from Geir. Now, if I can get Geir to conduct another "refresher" class. :-) Gosh, I don't seem to retain much of anything anymore!
