Salewa Raven Combi Boot fit etc

Can anyone comment on the fit of the Salewa Raven Combi boot? Also, how stiff is the sole? Anyone have a pair and have any comments on durability etc? I am looking for something like the LS Trango Extreme but wider in the forefoot/sixth toe area. I like the heel fit of the Trango. Scarpa Phantoms are too wide for me. The Scarpa Nepal fits me well but I am looking for a lighter boot for warmer conditions with long approaches.

Harpo,

I haven't tried on the other boots you mentioned, but I have had the Combi's since this summer. I took them on a few Cascade volcanoes, and hiking around snowy Yellowstone peaks. They are looking good as new. It is a full shank boot, but has a slight upward curve that makes hiking buttery smooth, but is a little less than ideal for frontpointing. Also have a nice lip along the front for edging action.

They are super light and breath well for what they do. I dig 'em, and plan on wearing them for a long time.

Hi Rob, are you saying they aren't ideal for front pointing because the sole isn't stiff enough, or because of the upward curve? Thanks, for the info.

Use boot boards in the phantoms to take up volume.

I have a pair of the Salewa Raven Combi. I wouldn't use them for front pointing. They are OK in crampons on snow/neve but not an ice boot. Pretty much the same for the Trango Evo..now where clsoe to a Trango Extreme. But the Raven is warmer and more ankle support than the Trango Evo. They also fit me more like the Nepal with a wider toe box.

Few if any boots as light as the Trango extreme that climb ice as well. Not much fun to walk in a long ways though. You won't find many (any) thing that will do both, front point well and walk easily.

Phantom Ultra is good. The newest Scarpa Rebel Ultra will be another. Current Rebel Carbon isn't bad with strap on 'pons.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
