Rick Ridgeway and Yvon Chouinard were also rescued from the water.

Wow. RIP Doug, I had a chance to stay at the conservation Patagonia campo for a few days to see how much good he had done for Patagonia. What a great man who's really changed the world and helped protect our open spaces and the Gauchos way of life through the hidroaysen crisis. Thanks for everything you've done for the world, rest in peace

My post on Supertopo linked above contains one source:

According to Emol Nacional ( emol.com/noticias/Nacional/…); others with Doug included Yvon Chouinard and Rick Ridgeway.

"El accidente ocurrió cuando el empresario y otras cinco personas -identificadas como Yvon Chouinard (EE.UU.), Rick Ridgeway (EE.UU.), Jim Ellison (EE.UU.), Weston Boyles (EE.UU.) y Lorenzo Alvarez (México)"

Edit: there is now more information in an article in Alpinist: alpinist.com/doc/web15y/new….

Sad news indeed. I have had a lot respect for the Thompkins and their preservation work. Something that is not really seen a lot.

I didn't know much about the work of Doug Tompkins until my fiance did a backpacking trip down to Patagonia. From what I understand, his contributions to land preservation in Patagonia (and globally for that matter) were unparalleled. He stands as an example of the positive contribution one can have in their lifetime.

Hoping that his family and friends are getting ready for a celebratory send-off party commensurate with his proud effort.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
