Ridgway State Park offers some good potential for highball bouldering along a west-facing, Dakota formation sandstone cliff line over Ridgway Reservoir with great views of the water and the Sneffels Range. It is perfect for after-work bouldering sessions for those willing to do a little exploring. The One-Of-A-Kind Boulder, tucked in shady pinyon-juniper forest, appears to be a solitary remnant of a Cimarrons-type volcanic deposit.
Please respect the Park regulations so as to not threaten this bouldering resource. The staff loves to bust folks for unleashed dogs, beer over 3.2%, etc. After climbing, take a swim at the beach, fish, or float yer boat.
From Ridgway, head north on US Hwy 550 about 5 miles to the Dutch Charlie entrance to Ridgway State Park. Display your entrance fee receipt, and park near the park headquarters. To get to the main Dakota cliff line, head west down the short, concrete Overlook trail. At the overlook, veer left, scramble down a gully, and follow the cliff line south looking for problems (5 minutes). The band of rock extends maybe a quarter mile.
To get to the One-Of-A-Kind Boulder, hike south 5 minutes on the gravel Nature Trail. The boulder is right on the trail in the P-J forest. You can't miss it.
