Poway Crags Rock Climbing
Leah Sandvoss flashing Gecko Staircase (5.11), Ram...
A nice little cragging area located on the flanks of Iron Mountain overlooking Ramona. There are two main areas. Poway Crags "Proper" is featured in the Kennedy guide and features short but steep climbs. The Ramona Wall is a separate area featuring longer but mostly more mellow climbing. Typical compact San Diego granite. Many bolted routes require a cam or two so bring a small rack up to 3".
The crag is mostly South and East facing so it will recieve morning sun and lots of it.
Be alert of fire damage to some bolts and rock. Wear a helmet, there is loose rock at the top of many climbs.
Park just South of Poway road on the 67. Take the very popular hikers' trail up toward Iron Mountain. At the trail fork (1.5 mi) hang a left toward the Ramona Overlook (additional 0.5 mi). Just past the trail junction with the overlook keep heading North toward the crag. It will be in view at this time.

Many bolts got burned during the 2003 Cedar Fire. One was tension tested and showed sufficient strength. I can't gaurantee them all, but I'll share the experiment. Burned out bolts
The bolt was the first lead bolt from the leftmost climb on the Lone Star wall. The climb showed lots of fire damage as did the first few bolts.
The fire seems to have accelerated the rusting so these bolts will continue to degrade.

This area has been opened to climbing as of 9/2010. The Ramona Wall and Miller Time Walls have seasonal closure Dec 15 through August 31. It is very important to respect this. The Ramona Wall is a prefect fall climbing area and receives afternoon shade.
