Hey - I'm visiting from MN for the next few days (returning 1/3) and I schlepped my sport gear along, hoping to take my brother out for a mellow day of cragging. My original objective was to hit Camelback Mountain, but that seems like an unwise choice given the recent rain. I don't want to be the out of town douche that comes in and pulls a bunch of holds off.
Could anyone with more local insight than me give me a recommendation? I'm looking for an area where I can climb w/o damaging the rock after the rain, has a few easy/moderate sport/top rope routes (5.10 and below) and is w/in an hour-ish drive of the Phoenix metro.
I've done some browsing of the areas and searching past forum posts and my initial thought was McDowell Mountains, but I would appreciate some local wisdom.
If it influences your recommendation I have a 60m rope and 12 draws with me.
Try The Pond in Queen Creek. It is warm when the sun is out and has a large range of moderate to hard routes. You can get a map of "The Road Area" for $5 at REI. The approach might hard to find, so see if a local can describe it to you. Feel free to PM me. Enjoy!
Browse the Queen Creek area on here first, then get the mini guide for whichever area you decide to frequent. The Pond area is great. The Atlantis area would probably work too.
