I'm going to be in Phoenix a few times over the next few weeks, and I'd love to get out on some real AZ rock. Anyone have some recommendations for classic routes in the Phoenix area? I'm also looking for a climbing buddy or a guide recommendation - if it comes down to that. I'm a fairly new leader but have been climbing for a while; mostly in NY and NH. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom

Final Pitch on Birdland - 5.7 Red Rocks

Welcome to AZ and I hope you get a chance to experience the rock before the heat overtakes us!

I would take a look at a couple local areas to assess your interest level -

Camelback mountain has one of the closest and Iconic climbs in the metro area - Praying Monk. Its easy but fun and the exposure and views are superb. The rock is not granite but will definetly get your attention ( lol )

McDowell Mountains are another stellar spot with a variety of areas to experience. This is a trad leaders paradise - Check out Hanging Gardens - 2 pitches 5.5
Of course there are a number of other climbs available ranging from 5.5 - 5.10+
Great area - a full week could be experienced here.

Pinnacle Peak boasts one of the largest moniliths in the area - it can be seen for miles and includes some of the best granite in the area. This is mostly trad - be prepared for stiff grades.

Of course, it you want to do some sport climbing - Queen Creek is only an hour away - hundreds of routes.
