Quincy is closed to climbing, Rattlesnake is open

Small boulder in the middle a potato patch central Wisconsin. Bolts along the top of the is high ball boulder makes top rope set-ups quick and easy. few short trad climbs, and a couple harder routes makes this a great practice area for a green climber.

Getting There

From interstate 39 outside of Coloma, head west on HWY. 73, then continue on CR D. Then South on W. You should see the tree covered backside of the rock from the crossroads. Park in the lot in the back not in front.

County Road W and D never cross. D crosses County road G and hwy 13 heading west. Which road is Owens Rock on?

I've not visited Owen's Rock but it is clearly marked on the updated Delorme's "Atlas and Gazetteer of Wisconsin". Take 73 west from I39 near Plainfield (not Coloma). Look for CR D (as 73 runs right into it). About two miles on CR D make a left (south) on CR W. Owens Rock looks to be about a half mile down the road.

The map shows that CR D does indeed intersect with CR W. The intersection is WEST of CR G.

09/06/2014-Visited boulder for first time; found the main face routes very enjoyable. Tread with care; chossy is prevalent. Mosquitos carried us half way up routes........There is poison ivy set back in taller grass line on main face side. Also, all the previously mentioned top bolts have been removed; only holes and chopped ends remain.

I viisited Owens Rock today and I can confirm that all the bolts, but one, have been removed. Does anyone know who did this or why?

I've climbed here off and on over the last 5 years and the bolts made this area very accessible to new climbers with limited gear--great for these 5.5 to 5.7 climbs. Today I still climbed two of the climbs but since there are no trees or boulders to sling these setups require trad gear and a reasonable amount of knowledge on how to place it etc. If anyone wants to re-bolt the area I would be willing to help and contribute to the cost.

Also, on my visit today I found a chalk bag that was left behind--probably recently. If it is yours message me.

Stephen.......I share your sediments (type of rock here) about placing bolts at Owens. I want to do more research on who owns the property and what restrictions may be in place. I hate to lose this excellent beginners training area just because of a few bolts. If we can get by the legal stuff I surely would fund some time, efforts, and costs on the project.

A fatality occurred here on 07/18/2015. 26 yr old tried to jump from top to first ledge and misjudged the size of the ledge and his momentum. This area may be closed; I will be in area in sept./oct. to give updates.

Visited area today 08/08/2015. Removed three bags of garbage and a television set that was discarded from the top of the rock. WTF are people thinking? Glass everywhere! Rock is really being tagged with paint......won't be surprised if DNR closes area! Let's not lose this little gem!
