Organ Mtns and areas around Las Cruces to be newest Natl Monument

Just saw this, I wonder what that means for climbing in the area. Although so much of it is so remote I would imagine it would be difficult to enforce any new climbing policies on a lot of the mountains. |

Forget climbing - the real issue is how we, as free 'Muricans, are gonna take the land back from the overreaching federal government and use it for its highest purpose - drilling the shit out of it for oil and then selling what's left to developers who'll fence out everyone else. |

I think this is great news. That area is amazing and needs to be protected. I believe this is something the locals have been advocating for a lot in the last few years. I can't really see it interfering with the climbing too much. |

I'm also curious how this affects the area. It was already a park / BLM land, though it seems the national monument covers far greater area. It can't encroach into Fort Bliss... can it? |

Here is a link to a map that I assume will be the area. It says "proposal" so I guess it might not be the final area. It appears to run up directly to the DOD land on the east side of the Organs. The Dona Ana's and Roguh and Ready hills climbing areas will be in the national monument as well. |
