Hey there!

Not only is it climbable, mid winter is arguably the best time to climb there. If the sun's out and it's 40 degrees you're climbing the in the reflector oven in a t-shirt. Probably a good bit of snow on the mountain now though. Was planning a trip this weekend that had to be axed due to the high probability of wet cracks.

Is there a guide book for Old Rag?

Me and the offspring walking back to the car after a day of cragging.

Eric Horst's book Rock Climbing Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland is probably the best one- still only ok and you'll do some searching for the crags that are furthest away from the main trail.

cool, will look that up.
I found this: old-rag-guide.blogspot.com/search/label/h.%20Summit%20Area%2>>>

Pure Fun is about the only route skill-wise I could probably handle.. especially solo.

If 5.7 is the only route that is doable for you, you may want to wait until it's warm. The easyish crags on the mtn like Summit and PATC are all north-facing and cold as hell in the winter months. There are a couple 5.7, 5.8 routes at the Reflector Oven, and that's where you want to go because it faces southeast and gets tons of sun.

For further reference, the Old Rag section of Horst's book is located here for free:
