It would break my heart if I had to stop visiting MP while at work. Can this be addressed? I'm looking for climbing info/discussion, not warez, torrents, or prOn.

It would seem we could/would have more control over the advertisers used here, especially with such a focus on the outdoors and no shortage in the supply of outdoors products and companies who I'm certain would compete heavily for the ad space on this site.

Your boss is more concerned about a bikini than the hours you spend on MP?

I guess doing work while at work since that is what they are paying you for is out of the question?

How do I get awesome ads like that to show up on MY computer? Mine are mostly for a PlayStation game to teach me how to be a rock guitar god, or for hotel rooms in Chattanooga! It's almost like my computer knows my interests! I wonder if other people's computers work like that too?

I don't spend hours here, but probably check in a few times a day.

Thankfully I have the kind of job this is permitted. Jealous?

So while the visiting of internet forums is permitted, having sexually suggestive content on my screen... is not. It's a HR thing.

Funny you mention that, because now the same banner is showing Guitar Center sales (I'm a musician), which seems more appropriate. Seeing that I don't play computer games (that's what the boobies ad is for), it would seem these ads are probably being randomly inserted into the general ad cycle for this site (which is why I mentioned it, since the admins would probably want it corrected).

I don't get any ads like that. Work or home. I use Firefox and Safari at home and installed plugins to remove ads.

Your boss is ok that you spend time on MP, but he is going to get uptight with you if there is a little advert with somebody in a swimsuit on it? Ridiculous! If there are big ads popping up with porn I could see them raising an eyebrow wondering what you have been viewing, but swimsuits? One would have to be a super prude.

Personally, I found the ad for the giant power line project in NH more appalling, but I recognize their right to advertise and doubt it is going to get much traction here anyway.

Some of our ads are "endemic" - meaning they're related to climbing or at least outdoor companies (REI is the biggest), and others come from Google Adsense. Google tries to match ads that they think would be relevant to you in particular. They base this on what other sites you visit, where you're located, and what searches you've done recently.

We do have some control over what categories of ads Google will show, and right now we don't have too many restrictions. We can change that if there are problems. I'm pretty sure Google won't be displaying warez, torrents, or porn!

BTW, people are routinely advising the use of Ad Blockers. I use them myself, but please recognize that tiny companies like MP exist only because of these ads. We do our best to make them tolerable and relevant, but in the end, no ads = no MP. So if you are willing to support MP, it would be great to turn off blocking for our site, and perhaps others like us.

Basically he's calling you a n00b for having pr0n cookies on your computer.

i suspect a few of the posters here are self-employed or at least work from home. For what its worth I would just point out that-- just as MP doesn't have a control of the ads they get through google-- individual employees who are not self employed or who do not work from home don't have much control of the policies or character of their workplace. That photo would run foul of every HR department workplace conduct code of every company I've ever worked for.

Jim

Edit: They also don't have control over the computers they use. And for what its worth, I look at a lot of photos of woman in bikinis on my computer and never get those ads. What gives?!

I would point out that while you see the adsense ads, based upon YOUR previous searches. Your employer is not able to see that ad content. I would be willing to bet a $1 the ad loads as a generic name/file that is random and always changing so it would load different each time and for each user. But really the only reason you're getting THAT ad is because of whatever you searched for.

I would turn off my adblocker for this sight if the ads weren't so pervasive, top, bottom, left, right. One along the side, one at the bottom not interrupting content (like viewing photos). I'd turn off my blocker for that change. . .

Now I'm trying to figure out why I have been getting ads for COPD meds on MP for the past 2 weeks. I thought I was an athletic, in shape, narly climber chick!

"MP exists only because of these ads"

This is an unfortunate mindset which extends to many aspects of life. In our finacial desperation we chose to support and look for help from those who make us finacially desperate. Why can't this site fund itself? Why can't this community support itself?

So continues the downfall of America.

Well, I know one reason it can't support itself so far: the epidemic of folks bitching about paying $10 for the incredibly useful MP app...

Aren't those cgi boobs?

Also nsfw is relative, I do bicycle delivery with a bunch of dudes, so sfw is a broad range to us.

Also I am almost entirely a mobile user (no internetz), and the only ads I get are for that new sweet looking OR softshell.

I've never felt so "tingly" over some animation before....

.... But yeah, it's a little "off-color" for someone walking by your desk at work. The other features of Mountain Project don't quite catch your attention like jugglies.

Funny....I have never seen such ads when perusing MP. I usually see ads for climbing gear and clothes, since that is what I generally search for on google more than anything else.

OP does know that google adsense is at least partially based off of past searches and keywords contained in your cache right?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
