Before the tyrolean on Sun Ribbon Arete, high Sierras.

Hi all,

I'm psyched to be checking out the Sierras for the first time in early July. You locals probably get this question often but guidance would be appreciated.

We plan on climbing in the Mt. Whitney / Russell area. East buttress, fishook arete, etc. I heard that the Sierras got dumped on this winter but that spring has been hot. How's the snowpack? Will we need crampons / axes / mountain boots? I guess there's often snow in the descent from Whitney / Mountaineer's Route? Is it bad enough to worry about?

Bump.
I have the same question, but also concerning Temple Crag and Bear Creek Spire areas in addition to the Whitney areas. Anyone been out recently? How's the snowpack? Can I get by without boots/axe/crampons.

I'll be up there the first two weeks of July. Thanks.

Beer Anyone?

Personally, I never make it past the Portal so I'm of no real assistance for current conditions.

You might find some useful info at

Good luck,
