As the area has grown it has become apparent that the Sierra Eastside needs a bit of an organizational shake up. We plan on getting a higher level structure in place. This structure will better reflect the distinct areas and their sub areas in the Sierra Eastside. Once that is in place well be tackling the individual areas, if they require more structure.

It is always a struggle to get in place a structure that is not too deep, and one that is not too shallow. Both make it hard to find things.

Let us know what you all think about the structure. This site is all about you and your contributions, and we want to provide a framework that works for everyone.

Here are the details of the new structure:

Bishop Area
Bridge Crag
Buttermilks
Cardinal Pinnacle
Fish Slough Road Boulders
Happy Boulders
Little Egypt
Owens River Gorge
Pine Creek
Wild Rose Buttress

June Lakes Area
Aeolian Buttes
June Lakes Bouldering

Mammoth Lakes Area
Al's Garage
Alpers Canyon
Bear Crag
Clark Canyon
Crystal Crag
Dike Wall
Horseshoe Piles
Horseshoe Slabs
Looking Wall
Mammoth Lakes Bouldering
Matrimony Wall
Rock Creek
The Stumps
T J Lake
Volcanic Tablelands
Warming Wall

Whitney / Lone Pine Area
Alabama Hills
Whitney Portal

Eastern Hills
Benton Crags
Sagehen Summit Area

What was left of the rack when I topped out on the last pitch of Snake Dike on Half Dome.

To make it easy to actually know where all those places are for all of us that have frequented a few, but not all, it would be nice to have a map with each area pinpointed on it for the main Sierra Eastside page. That way, we'll know where to navigate to when looking for new nearby areas when we're in the area.

The Happys and the Sads are both in the volcanic tablelands. I don't quite understand why the Happys are separate. This might be a bit confusing.

Thanks for the comments. An overview map is a great idea. I'll work on that and hopefully get something posted soon.

The Volcanic Tablelands was wrongly listed under the Mammoth Area in the earlier post. The correct name for that sub area, and the one posted is, 'The Sherwin Plateau'.

When I think of a climbing area, I just think about which guide book its in. I like the way Marty Lewis has organized his guidebooks. Eastern Sierra North, and Eastern Sierra South. In the North (Mammoth/June Lakes) sector, include everything from the top of the Sherwin Grade to Sagehen Summit. In the South (Bishop/Lone Pine) sector, include everything from the Owens River Gorge to Whitney Portal.

Too many climbs are located in between Mammoth and June to have the areas separated. Things like Deadman's, Clark Canyon, or the Triple Cracks could really go into either group. I vote that the June Lakes area be combined with the Mammoth area, with sub area called "June Lakes Loop" for any climbing located in the scenic basin. Currently the Bachar Boulders are too hard to find.

The Eastern Hills area is a bit contrived. There isn't really enough climbing at any of the areas to keep it separate. Areas like the Looking Wall or Casa Diablo could also be thought of as Eastern Hills or Mammoth Lakes area. Where does one draw the line?

The Bishop and Lone Pine areas could easily be combined as well.

Many people travel to Bishop just for the bouldering. Why not make it easy for them to find what they're looking for and make a separate bouldering area?

I propose having four areas on this website database. Mammoth Area crags, Bishop Area crags, Bouldering, and Eastern Sierra Ice.

I agree that some organization is needed, but having lived there for 6 years and climbed on almost every crag on the East Side, this is what makes the most sense to me.

me

right now the buttermilks section is sort of a mess. it's much more confusing than it needs to be. the problem is some people submit areas, and then some people submit boulders themselves that are located in an area that's already in the database. i did submit an overview map of the buttermilks with what i felt were the most commonly used names in the area breakdown (i could be wrong). It seems these areas should be what you see on the main buttermilks page, then have the individual boulders under those areas. for example, the 'egypt boulders' or 'tut boulder' (as they are both in there...) should be under "Central Area", then we can go from there.

any other opinions here?? i just feel like it being a prime destination and all, it should be organized and cleaned up.

just a thought
