Cerro Lopez Col

Hey I am relocating to Napa County next fall. I am wondering what sort of climbing options I have within an hour. I am of course excited about the prospect of having Yosemite and the High Sierra's within a days drive, but what about stuff that is only an hour away or so? Also is there much of a climbing community in Napa?

Thanks,
Judd

PS also any info on hiking trails for trail running would be sweet.

There is some climbing on Mt. St. Helena, just above calistoga, about 40 minutes or less away? Sport.

A new gym opened in Napa within the last year or so as well. Haven't been there though.

I think there is also a little bit of local bouldering, and you're about 30 minutes from the vacaville boulders.

Lots of senic trails too.

Hey Judd,
There are some good trails in Bothe State Park, The Palisades, Mt. St. Helena, and up in Angwin. Some of these are good for mtn biking too.

As for community, there are some pretty decent climbers in the napa valley if you can find them. Here's a local resource: http://rockicemountain.org. Check the forum on that site and come to the monthly meetings in Santa Rosa. You'll meet some nice folks. There is a climbing wall up at PUC in Angwin as well where you might meet some people.

There is some bouldering in Angwin and sport routes on Mt. St. Helena, as Caughtinside said, plus you are only an hour from good coastal climbing.

Cheers,
Jerry

Judd,
Talk to the staff at the Calistoga bike shop for the full story about the maze of trails in the surrounding hills.
I learned about the climbing by painstakingly searching out the "Destinations" on this forum and "Routes" over at RC.com.
Go down to the gym in Napa, Rockzilla, and pick up a copy of "Wine Country Rock" and the "Supertopos Bay Area Bouldering" guides.
Lastly, feel free to send me a message - I live 10 miles south of Napa in Vallejo, and have a lot of free time, especially during week days.
Cheers
Chris

Me with serious beverage

For bouldering, the Putah Creek boulders just below the Lake Berryessa dam rock. Check out the Wine County guidebook for details. The Vacaville boulders are a bit more chossy, but may be worth a visit. Indian Rock in Berkeley is a good bouldering spot, although the rhyolite can be a bit greasy. Turtle Rock in Tiburon has decent bouldering with great views. Other than St. Helena, not much rope climbing within an hours drive. Welcome to the neighborhood.
