Me in the winter

I have a long weekend planned in Bishop coming up and I am looking for a place to camp near the boulders of the Buttermilk.

Last time I was up there, I noticed a lot of tents and trailers (i have a pop-up) off the side of the main road on the way in.

Is this BLM land or does one need to register. Is there any formal camping near by? Does anyone have some insight on the weekend squating here and the rules?

Any help or recommendations would be great.

It's all BLM land up there so you can go wherever you like. Just don't camp too close to the creek that's closer to the highway on your way up to the boulders. The Pit is also a popular place to camp. Horton Creek, N on the 395 less than 10 miles from Bishop, is also a nice place to camp. Both of the latter 2 options are more official campsites with pit-toilets, fire-rings, etc. Watch out for the heat and enjoy...
