Does anyone have suggestions for campgrounds in North Conway? I see that there are a lot of options but didn't know if there is one that is better than the others. Thanks!

To the best if my knowledge there isn't much camping around the climbing areas in n. Conway. I'd say the closest is the campground at the base of Sundown cliffs. I've never stayed there, but it looks good enough. If you want something free, there's some info out there on the interweb, if you look hard enough.

What do you want? Showers and electricity or just a site? Free or pay? Where do you plan to climb?

The Covered Bridge Campground is right by Sundown, it's forest service. Also out there is Jigger Johnson, also FS.

In Evans Notch is Wild River, Hastings, plus a bunch of free sites along the river, and Basin Pond.

For pay with amenities the one in Glen is popular, and there is another before you get to Conway by Lake Iona.

30 some--odd years ago we would simply hang hammocks on top of the 1st pitch of the Mordor Wall and jug back up afer drinking in town, seemed to work well, Bivys were legal .

My first trip here we slept every night on top of Cathedral, in nice soft pine needle filled depressions. Those were the days!

Shit..you guys are as old as me !

For sure check what camps are open early season...and the cg at Cannon is WAY pricey...Sundown is Ok

We plan on spending most of our time at Cathedral Ledge. I'm not that picky just want somewhere thats easily accessible to the climbing and isn't too expensive. Camping at Cathedral sounds awesome but I assume that frowned upon now.

Last time I climbed at Cathedral I camped at Crawford Notch, directly across from the Frankenstein cliff. It was about a 20 minute drive every day but I didn't have to drive through North Conway which is a big plus.

You can camp along the Kancamagus Highway too, just gotta camp 150 yards off the road. Its like 20 minutes back to the cliff. In summer you can camp on the other side of the river--wading back in the morning will wake you up!

We used to stay at either blackberry crossing or covered bridge. They're both on the Kancgamangus(?) outside of N Conway. If you know the backroads it will take you about 25 minutes to get to Whitehorse/Cathedral ledge. The back roads bypass the main road which can get pretty backed up with tourist traffic. After climbing we'd go for a swim in the Saco. Going thru town only to get supplies.

The Fourth Iron campground in Bartlett is about 10-15 min from cathedral, and has a nice swimming hole in the SAco river. Not sure how much it costs, maybe $10. Depending on how stealthy you can be there are also a million opportunities in that area heading toward Crawford notch to park and hike for 3 minutes into the woods or across the river to camp. SAme with Evan's Notch and the Kanc. That is what I do, avoid the crowds and camp in a peaceful place. I've found it hard to find a place super close to N. Conway though.

I think camping is still OK along Hurricane Mountain Rd,,east of Conway. The semi legal places get fewer and fewer every year and some of the roads (Bear Notch , Sawyer ) won't be open early
