A portion of the Near Trapps has been closed to climbing. This includes land below the cliff to above cliff line and starts approximately at Eenie Meenie and continues south about 200 feet. Climbers are asked to respect the no-trespassing signs and advised to use the access trail marked in orange blazes. This trail starts at the intersection of the Blue trail over the top of the Nears and the first Red trail. Follow the orange blazes east and downhill from this junction to arrive at the far (south) end of the Nears. For more information please view http://www.mohonkpreserve.org/index.php?news
Climb to the good hold above the roof, crank the hang (crux), then up to the next roof. Over the roof and up the slab to a pine tree. This is listed in the Near Trapps guide as a variation to Just For The Record, and it does have the feel of a mini climb more than a real route. However, it is well protected and the crux moves are gymnastic and interesting. It would be a good choice for someone looking to break into the grade
Location
Approximately 40-50 feet left of the Tree Filled Chimney - which is down and left from the White Pillar - there are two right-facing corners. Just For The Record climbs the leftmost corner, and Swells Good starts 10 feet left of that. There is a small ledge a few feet off the ground and an obvious overhang.
Protection
Standard 'Gunks rack, nothing very big or very small is needed.
