A portion of the Near Trapps has been closed to climbing. This includes land below the cliff to above cliff line and starts approximately at Eenie Meenie and continues south about 200 feet. Climbers are asked to respect the no-trespassing signs and advised to use the access trail marked in orange blazes. This trail starts at the intersection of the Blue trail over the top of the Nears and the first Red trail. Follow the orange blazes east and downhill from this junction to arrive at the far (south) end of the Nears. For more information please view http://www.mohonkpreserve.org/index.php?news
Climb the face past a tiny tree - good cracks for protection - to ledges, then up a low angled face and another ledge or two to a pine tree. The upper section after the first ledge is almost fourth class and needs a bit more cleaning. However, the lower face does have some nice moves, so this climb is worthwhile if you want something short, well protected, and enjoyable.
Location
Approximately 75 right of Easter Time Too there is a very large detached block. Go back right around the block and on its other side there is a low angled gully. Route Awakening starts just right of this gully. Look for the face with the cracks and a very small tree about 12 feet up.
