A portion of Near Trapps has been closed to climbing MORE INFO >>>
A portion of the Near Trapps has been closed to climbing. This includes land below the cliff to above cliff line and starts approximately at Eenie Meenie and continues south about 200 feet. Climbers are asked to respect the no-trespassing signs and advised to use the access trail marked in orange blazes. This trail starts at the intersection of the Blue trail over the top of the Nears and the first Red trail. Follow the orange blazes east and downhill from this junction to arrive at the far (south) end of the Nears. For more information please view http://www.mohonkpreserve.org/index.php?news
Step up on to the small ledge just off the ground, then climb straight up to a good hold under a small roof. Move straight right (crux) and around the corner to a stance. Go directly up the fun face to a pine tree belay. Interesting and fun moves and a brief crux.
Location
Locate the large, orange right-facing corner of Eenie Meenie, then walk approximately 40 feet left. There will be a short gully leading to a large tree 10 feet up and a face with cracks immediately left of the gully. Left meets Right starts just left of the gully.
Protection
The smallest Metolius TCU - the 00 - was, for me, important. A slightly larger cam can be used below, but a fall on that piece would swing the climber into the rock.
