Welcome to the New Mexico section of Mountain Project!
The contributions that are made to this site are greatly appreciated; this site is made up of an awesome community of users that make the site what it is.
Although there is very little information regarding “rules” for submitting climbing areas and routes to this site, the New Mexico Administers all agree that the following guidelines may be helpful to truly make this site go “Beyond the Guidebook”.
1) Don’t be a jerk (this one states the obvious). 2) Route and area submissions should truly be helpful to those out climbing. Before posting, you should have some first hand experience actually climbing the route. This always results in a much more useful description. 3) Please, please, please… Don’t copy route descriptions directly out of guidebooks, online publications, etc. This is plagiarism! Remember, BEYOND the guidebook! 4) Please use the spell check and make an effort to use correct grammar.
Again, the Mountainproject community truly appreciates the efforts taken to make good route descriptions. If you feel that a route or area description is not up to standard, a brief email to one of the area admins for suggestions on improvement will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to make the New Mexico section of Mountain Project quality! We look forward to seeing you out there!
Description
There is a great array of crags right around the town of Los Alamos:
- The Dungeon: Premier overhung rhyolite sport climbing in a beautiful setting. A great summer area.
- The Back Rocks: North of Clifty in upper Rendia Canyon with about 20 routes.
- Clifty: A Rhyolite crag near the town of Los Alamos. A nice get-away for locals.
- Upper Clifty: On the top of The Clifty Hill and can be seen from the north community of Los Alamos.
- Y, The: hosts 45' crack climbs in a narrow portion of lower Los Alamos Canyon. A good choice for basalt climbing in Los Alamos/White Rock in the summer.
- Los Alamos Canyon: A selection of climbs can be found in Los Alamos Canyon, just south of the town of Los Alamos.
- School Canyon: A vast tuff crag with lots of potential for route development and lots of fun bouldering. Most of the routes are pretty short but tend to offer stiff and entertaining climbing.
Getting There
From I-25, head either north or south toward Santa Fe (depending on where you are coming from), and get onto highway 285/84 toward Pojoaque. From Pojoaque head west on highway 502. Highway 502 will take you to the Los Alamos/White Rock split. Follow highway 501 to Los Alamos, and look at individual area directions from there.
Powerful overhung climbing on good holds to a powerful 4th clip, a long draw is nice. Then a well defined crux to a rest, to some thin technical, difficult when pumped climbing to the anchors....[more]
