Welcome to the New Mexico section of Mountain Project!
The contributions that are made to this site are greatly appreciated; this site is made up of an awesome community of users that make the site what it is.
Although there is very little information regarding “rules” for submitting climbing areas and routes to this site, the New Mexico Administers all agree that the following guidelines may be helpful to truly make this site go “Beyond the Guidebook”.
1) Don’t be a jerk (this one states the obvious). 2) Route and area submissions should truly be helpful to those out climbing. Before posting, you should have some first hand experience actually climbing the route. This always results in a much more useful description. 3) Please, please, please… Don’t copy route descriptions directly out of guidebooks, online publications, etc. This is plagiarism! Remember, BEYOND the guidebook! 4) Please use the spell check and make an effort to use correct grammar.
Again, the Mountainproject community truly appreciates the efforts taken to make good route descriptions. If you feel that a route or area description is not up to standard, a brief email to one of the area admins for suggestions on improvement will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to make the New Mexico section of Mountain Project quality! We look forward to seeing you out there!
Description
The routes at the Poultrygeist area tend to be a little more diverse than those on in the Chicken Little Area, with more pockets, overhangs, some jugs, and some exciting stemming. I thought the routes actually tended to be more fun here, in general. The routes range from low 5.10 to 5.12a.
Getting There
See Photo. Head right from the top of the trail at Chicken Little area, heading along the base of the cliffs until you get past a chossy area of rock to nice stone again.
Routes
Walking toward the right from the Chicken Little Area, you will come across two routes in nice rock. It will be an obvious break from the choss. These first two routes are (left to right):
NOTE: Cockeyed and Fowl Play are both rated incorrectly in Beverly's Jemez Rock, as both are listed as 5.8. The ratings above more correctly represent the difficulties of the climbs and also are the ratings in Rick Bradshaw's online guide.
A word of CAUTION: The two far right climbs at the Poultrygeist area, Cockeyed and Fowl Play, are mis-rated in the excellent Jemez Rock & Pecos Area guidebook by Marc Beverly. Both are listed as 5.8 but are considerably more difficult.
Cockeyed is 5.10c and Fowl Play is 5.11a as per the online guide.
I agree about the ratings. I would not consider this guide excellent, but only inaccurate on many occations. Just an opinion and an observation. Thanks for the beta Jason.
