If you've driven down the Kancamagus, chances are you have seen Rainbow Slabs. The 200 feet of southeast-facing, water-streaked granite offer moderate but extremely run-out friction climbing.
Getting There
The approach to the slabs definitely adds to the adventure of climbing here. Drive east on the Kancamagus, until you reach the Lower Falls parking area. If the Swift River is low enough, you can park at a pullout (marked by a break in the guard rail) just west of the Lower Falls lot. Ford the river and cut into the woods to find the Nanamocomuck ski trail. Walk east on the trail until you find a small wooden sign with mileages marked on it. From here, turn north into the woods, following a trail that leads through to the base of the slabs.
If the river is too high, you can park at the Albany covered bridge and walk along the Nanamocomuck trail to the afore-mentioned point.
Understand that past the Nanamocomuck trail, the way may or may not be well-marked, and that getting lost is a possibility!
