Heard rumors around the fire that the currently-out-of-print 1st & 2nd ed are going for ridiculous numbers online... So I took a look tonight to see what the damage was if you tried to get one and was all like =O

fortunately I have a copy of the Smith guide from when they were easy to get, but I ask, anyone have a little birdie on the in with Ward and know when the 3rd edition is coming out?

Because numbers like this exist on the interweb....

I've heard on neclimbs that it will be next year some time. The common cafe had them for awhile but haven't looked lately. My buddy picked a 2nd edition up basically brand new at his local library for .50 cents! Sold it for a ridiculous price!

uhhh I should be able to.. But I don't need to as stated I have one; and for people that do - they find out it's sold out at retailers both in store and online for the advertised price. This post is just an inquisition to anyone that might have more info....

Thanks for the info. They Common Cafe's been sold out since the beginning of the season... I've been waiting for breakfast there a couple mornings and they get phone calls asking if they have the book - quite frequently it seems. Also - gem find for your friend. How'd he get that price was the lib closing out? That's an awesome pick up!

This is getting kinda nuts, cheapest price I can find anywhere is 100...

These nutty prices are for the first edition right?

I have two of the second eds at home. . . that would be pretty silly if those were going for $100+

WAIT $600 for a new First edition... WTF???

Let's hope for Ward's sake he kept a case of the first ones to sell on Ebay 15 years later! I have to remember to do that if I ever write a guidebook.

Here is a long thread from NEClimbs.com that started in 2007 with people asking how the second edition (the one with Predator on the cover) was coming along. It came out in 2009

Saw plenty of 2nd Edition @ EMS last week.

Also please ask Ward to finally use pictures instead of the drawings that he has been using for the last 2 editions - they have caused many confusions and mini-epics for newbies. My favorite is watching this guy getting on Gold Bug thinking they are getting on Gold Digger. I think he was close to crying at the crux.

Keeps it entertaining at the crag, Ming.

It is really hard to get good overview photos of crags in the east, since most are buried in the trees.

Might be able to get some from the hill across the valley with a good lens on a clear cold late fall day. Jeff's is the best crag overview photo so far of the Main Cliff(with a few small topo errors), but the smaller crags are pretty hidden to show the whole cliff.

Those prices on Amazon.com are usually the result of bots that monitor prices/availability and automatically adjust their market prices. You'll see prices inflate in crazy ways when all the bots get into a 'feedback loop' of sorts, adjusting off each other when there aren't any other sellers.

For me, well done drawings are clear enough. With photos, you need to add the lines of the routes anyways.
As for the schedule, we all have to be mindful of the kiddie-ference factor.

She'll be old enough to help him with the drawings pretty soon, S. ;)

I picked up a Ward Smith guide at New England Backpacker in Worcester, MA for list price a couple months ago. They had another copy as well. Nice folks and they will reserve it for you if you ask. I also scored a Cannon guide from them (John Sykes, also out of print) before that.

I have a few new copies of the Ward Smith guide book if anyone is interested.

Maybe the rest of the Summit will be developed by the time the 3rd edition comes out. The approach from the North West Territories has really been improved over the last couple of years and with the addition of California Chrome and the routes at The Very Nice Crag, the Summit should start to come into the lime light. I mean... look at it! It's soooo big and it's for the most part ignored! Karmic Realignment is calling. :P

Will you take $400 for it?

Dammit... okay $400 and a litter of kittens? And I'll throw in a snake just in case you don't like kittens (ie snake food).

Maybe I can make millions on a viral video of the snake eating the catz????

I called EMS and they were able to ship me the guidebook for $30 with free shipping. A couple stores told me they didn't have it so I had them search their system and they found one at a store in CT.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
