red rocks oak creek canyon body recovery?

I was going to go hiking today in oak creek canyon. On my way up the dirt road off of the main loop road toward the parking area, I encountered a massive line of SAR vehicles (50+)along the road. I ran into someone with the "operation" who told me that a body recovery effort was underway for someone (presumably a climber based on the terrain) who died about 5 years ago. I remarked that it seemed like a huge turnout given the late timing and he said that there was indeed some element of a training excercise included hence the large number of rescuers. It appeared that they were landing a hellicopter on top of a lower formation across from solar slab, etc. Anybody have any idea what happened and who's remains are being recovered? I can find no record of any fatal accident in that vicinity.

Rumor has it that this was a suicide from a number of years ago. There was a rusted gun near the body. And it is possible that all they found was a torso.

All rumors aside does anyone have any real information? At this point it seems the only thing for sure is that there was a large scale SAR training session taking place. What does the local vegas news report?

I should have been less elusive on such a topic. There were a lot of rumors flying around right after this body was discovered.

The only thing that really is still a rumor from my previous post is the part about the torso. The rest is true and was reported to me by a reputable source. The body was found Red Rock Rendezvous weekend. Based on MWP's description of the "rescue" -- i.e. an old body on the south side of Oak Creek Canyon on Mount Wilson -- I can only assume that this was the recovery of the body I described in my previous post.

I was told that the body was not that of a climber.

How does someone get all the way up there to commit suicide. Seems like alot of work for someone to go to when they are just going to use a gun.

Seems like a very long way to go for a short bullet. Any ID yet?

This incident brings to mind a climber that disappeared in this area in Jan of '05: John Rosholt -- Was he ever found..?

John "the gambler" has never surfaced and no word of what has happened to him. Karsten, were you there when we were talking about him at the SF?

Interesting story, I'm curious to see if it was a suicide. I'm always amazed that people get so desperate that they feel taking their own life is the best solution.

Sad for them and their families.

I didn't hear about "the gambler" at the SF but I know at least a little about his story from when he originally went missing. A sad story for sure. One of my classmates husband killed himself this year leaving behind his wife and a 3 year old son. It really hurts all those around them the most. I have never understood suicide.

I think if I ever felt that bad about my situation I would round up as much money as I could and head south to argentina or somewhere and start a new life afresh.

People who commit suicide are on to something.

From my point of view, they are very brave. But I also understand the argument that they are very weak and selfish. No arguing about suicide being a selfish act. On a side note, I completely understand the reason why someone would climb to a beautiful vantage point before "saying goodbye." If you don't understand depression, you won't get it.

Is it sad? Tremendously. Especially in this age of great drugs.

If you are on the verge of suicide, please seek help. There are some great drugs that can work wonders.

It's not brave to leave your family to fend for themselves. It's an act of desperation and depression. It's an act of escape. Not an act of bravery.

Is it possible for people to stay on topic with this one rather than pontificating their own worthless beliefs and opinions?

Guess not.

Start another thread titled "I know why people end their lives..." and then have at it. Let's leave this thread alone until some facts come along.

Well said Robert. Now about those facts, are there any?

John J. Glime · · Cottonwood Heights, UT · Joined Aug 2002 · Points: 1,160

Robert, boo hoo, you aren't gettin facts. The person killed themself, talking about suicide is off topic?

And even if it is off topic, how many threads don't drift?

You aren't adding any facts either so your comment is equally as worthless/pointless.

John, see how easy that was?

Thanks Susan, some days I am grumpier than others. I better go take my anti-depression medication.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
