Description

Ice? Near Las Vegas? Couldn't be...

Suprisingly enough a small number of ice climbs come in on Mount Charleston with some regularity. Most of these climbs are easily accessible from the road and require little commitment.

One word of caution, some ice formations don't bond well on the limestone. Be sure to evaluate your climb closely before committing to it.

Getting There

To Get to Mount Charleston from Las Vegas, Take I-95 North to 157. Take a left turn crossing the Southbound Lane and follow Hwy 157 for 20.6 Miles.

There are three access points.

The first is the Mary Jane Parking Lot. To reach the Mary Jane Parking Lot, continue straight down Echo road .4 miles. At Echo Well No. 3, veer left and drive 3 miles to the Mary Jane Parking area. The elevation here is 7840.

The second access point is the Cathedral Rock Parking Lot. To reach the Cathedral trailhead, continue driving on 157 for a half mile or 21.1 miles from I-95. Do not take Echo Road towards the Mary Jane Parking Lot.

The third access point is Group Picnic Area #1. To approach climbs from this area, park as for Cathedral Rock. Continue walking beyond the small lot to a right hand turn a few hundred yards away. Walk up this road to the Group Picnic Area and the start of the South Loop Trail.
