Hello all -- The fam and I are headed to Vegas the third week of June. Would like to find some TR (fairly easy routes) and include our kids, but heat is obviously a concern. Not surprisingly, Red Rock looks to have average highs of 100 degrees. Damn desert. :)

Any suggestions for summer climbing oasis in Vegas area? Any specific TR areas in Red Rock or elsewhere that might offer shade?

Thanks much!

Vegastradguy follows the crux pitch of Western Swing on Windy Peak.

there are some places- the Black Corridor comes to mind, that offer shade all day and have fairly moderate routes. The Corridor, though, requires a leader.

the Peaches area in Willow Springs might be good in the afternoon. you can walk up and around to set the TR. Tonto by Ragged Edges is also accessible via a walk around to the right.

even in the shade, though, the heat can be oppressive. while the average is 100, the third week of june tends to be pretty hot- i'd say you're probably more likely to see highs in the 105-115 range that time of year.

If you and your family can deal with some 5.10 sport climbing, the limestone up at Mt. Charleston offers much cooler temps (mid 80s) and a more alpine environment.....

Even when the lights are too low and funky to see the walls at Red Rocks, cool sights abound. We have no idea what so confused the growth of this agave. Photo by Tony Bubb 12/02.

Expect Red Rocks to be ~10 degrees cooler in June, by my experience, and then for the N facing rocks in the deeper Cnayons to be cooler still. In 1995 and 1997, I spent the month of June in Red Rocks.
I just checked my pictures - shorts and no shirts in the sun, long pants and long sleaves in Black Velvet Canyon and the like.

Thanks much for the help VegasTrad and Tony. Vegas, our kids are only 5 and 8, and just beginning in the sport, so we'll need to stick to TR (which is all my wife and I have done as well -- eventually we hope our kids will be leading us :)). Thanks for the suggested possibilities. We'll only need a route or two for a half-days worth of climbing, and could start early in the day, so hopefully Red Rock will yield a possibility. I'd like to whet the kids' appetities for the area so they'll be begging to return when they get older. :) At worst, we'll drive through and take a look.

Tony, it is good to hear that June isn't necessarily off-limits; I looked through all the posts on this forum, and understandably there is little or no discussion of June-August climbing. I imagine Mt.Charleston and other spots beckon during the summer. In any event, I will definitely look at the areas you and Vegas suggested.

Sincere thanks for the advice so far, and any additional thoughts. Take care all.

You might look at Sesame Street (5.7 to 5.9) on the Universal Wall at Mt Charleston. Some of those routes can be top roped and some must be led. Safe enough place for children. There are 6 - 5.10 climbs that can be top roped -with a little effort- in that same bowl... some photos on my profile site

There is another area at Charleston you could go - about 2 mile approach hike on Forest Service trail. Email me for details
