Hey there

Anyone know any good camping spots other than Red Rocks campground, or like some nat'l forest land nearby? The Red Rocks campground is full and we're traveling in a group of 12 arriving late at night- might not be able to get into the campground on a popular weekend. Any suggestions out there? Thanks

We stayed at a campground up by Mt. Charleston a few years ago. It was about 45 minutes (?) from Red Rocks, if I recall correctly. Couldn't tell you anymore than that.

I have had success there. If you are gonna head back to the strip at night. The Frontier is a guaranteed no bust back by all the motor homes.
I also think that south of RR toward Epi is a BLM area that I have heard of to camp for free. I have not gone there though. I think it is about 20 minute drive south of the other campground.

i'm saying if you look outside the box and are willing to make a little drive, there's plenty of open country as soon as you hit the BLM boundary. just be smart.

Lovell Canyon Rd. off of Hwy 160 right after Mountain Springs. I've camped there before and there is plenty of room to spread out if you're in a group.

We traveled there in the dark after driving all the way from Idaho one day and finding the RR campground full. It was actually the camp hosts that suggested it and it worked out well for us despite the 1/2 hour drive to RR from Lovell Canyon.

Lovell Canyon is nice, quiet/peaceful, FREE (except for extra gas) and easy, if not as close as you would like.

Don't waste your time checking out the "pullouts" along the highway between Red Rocks and Lovell Canyon, just put the hammer down over the pass while your favorite Dead show blasts on the radio, and you'll be to Lovell before you know it.

Tried to find this on the other threads, couldn't... I have camped in my rig on one of the pullouts on the Hwy and wasn't bothered. Is this frowned upon? Also, do you need to get a permit to bivy in Oak Creek Canyon (assuming you don't park in the scenic loop and on the Hwy)? Would like to do Eagle Dance and Levitation over Presidents Day weekend and looking to gain the time edge on the ensuing masses.

Yes, you need a bivy permit to sleep in Oak Creek. They are free, just call in at (702) 515-5050 and follow the instructions.

and, i don't know, but my guess is yes. Worst case, law enforcement will tell you to move along.

I'm looking for van bivy sites near RR. We will probably eat most dinners out, so don't necessarily need a place to chill/cook, just need a place to slip into and crash for the night. You can pm if you'd prefer.

Got rained out last trip down there, looking forward to this one and sunny skies.
Also looking for favorite taqueria's on that side of town.

There is one BLM campground. There is nowhere else nearby to camp except some canyon 30 miles away where your gear will be stolen. It will forever be this way.

Traveling with 12 people, can't you reserve a group site? Did this a couple of times, makes the whole 13 Mile campground as easy as possible.

Group sites can be reserved by calling 702.515.5350 and speaking with Chelise. She's a very pleasant person to talk with. The sites are $40/night, can have 8 vehicles, and up to 20 people. She can email you a credit card payment form, or you can pay by check more than 2 weeks in advance. Reservations are considered tentative until she has payment, so I'd opt for the CC option.

never been - wanted to know if you can walk to climbs at the RR campground. Is there more than one?

Hard to find a good area map showing campgrounds and crags.

i have a popup camper and prefer to leave it up and parked and walk to climbs. don't care if the CG sux, just if it is close to climbs.
