Neckarland (Stuttgart area) Rock Climbing
Hessigheimer Fels, peaceful views of the vinyards ...
Spanning just beyond Stuttgart to the south, and Heilbronn to the north, the Neckar river cuts like a serpent through a lush valley. The area was sought after and settled by the Celtics, Romans, Napoleon and vintners.
There are only two crags here, but rock quality is good, and route numbers are high. The landscape is particularly beautiful at Hessigheim.
TRAIN: To either Bessigheim (Hessigheim crags), or Weinstadt (Stetten) from Stuttgart.
Climbing Season For the Germany area.

Hessigheim is convenient, short and fun, but the area sees so much traffic that anything under 5.12 is so polished and greasy that it detracts from the climbing. Stetten has great friction on its gritty sandstone and is even shorter in height than Hessigheim. Both areas will let you get your fix of climibing near town, but much better climbing 30 minutes South near the Tubingen area in the Swabian Alb.
