Munising Michigan is THE place in the Midwest to ice climb. Routes up to 200 feet high form right out of Lake Superior, with not a single ice climb rated below WI3. There are over 150 climbs in a 20+ mile long shoreline (including Grand Island) with many, many climbs rated WI5 and a lot rated WI6 and higher.

more routes coming soon.

Dairyland WI5  MI : Munising : Sand Point Road to Miners C...
This is it, the mother of all Munising climbs, although it’s not the hardest, it’s the biggest, fattest, and most inspiring climb to look at and climb in the park. The climb forms in two HUGE pillars fed by a creek above, that come together at the top to form massive bat wings. From the frozen lake to the top of the cliff, it is over 200 feet high, with the actual climbing lasting for about 150 feet. The usual plan of attack is to rappel down the climb from above and lead it back out. If you...[more]   Browse More Classics in MI

Is it true that no dry tooling is allowed in Munising? I had heard one such rumor.

The park service discourages drytooling but it's not that big of a deal; in Munising the rock is more sand than stone. You just kind of scratch through the stuff. If it were harder sandstone, kind of like the sandstone at the RRG, Munising would be a household name in the climbing community. Super-steep overhanging cliffs with all kinds of daggers hanging down. Oh well. The ice is fantastic though and the # of routes is much greater than what's in the guidebooks. Plus there are NO crowds as long as you stay away from the Curtains/Dryer Hose area.
