I'm looking at climbing Mt. Whitney around mid May and was wondering if summer rock conditions will exist on the east facing routes then. I know California had a poor snow year. Do you think crampons will be necessary?
Can't really predict the conditions that far in advance, but I'd venture a guess that the east-facing routes will be good-to-go in mid-May. Hey, I just made a prediction! It really depends on whether there is, uh, weather, in the week before your trip.
Can't go wrong with some lightweight (aluminum, strap-on) crampons.
