Rock Climbing Photo: Great Arch behind
It looks like I will be in Kenya for a month or two next summer and I would love to find a partner or hook up with a group to climb Mt. Kenya when I'm out there. I'm not too sure what all it will entail, being technical rock only or some ice, bu I would like to go ahead and start planning incase I do need to familiarize myself with ice over the winter. Is anyone else planning on climbing mt. kenya next summer? I would be willing for a state side adventure too before we end up on the other side of the earth to make sure everything is kosher.

Also any good info on it would be much appreciated.

there shouldn't be much ice up there. From what i understand the glaciers up there have all but dissapeared. I climbed to Point Nelion in 2006, without crampons/rope. The actual high point, (point Lenana? I might have my peaks mixed up) requires a pitch or 2 of 5.8. Good luck up there, plan to spend a day or two just hanging out around 10-14k feet, taking in the Dr Seuss scenery, it's otherworldly like no place I've been before. germsauce

wufpac18...... I was on Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2001. Not much concern regarding ice, but both Batian and Nelion (Mt. Kenya's two summits) involve long alpine rock adventures, not unlike the east face of Mt. Whitney or routes on the Grand Teton. The big hurdles are getting acclimatized ( 50% of the world's altitude illness occurs on Kenya or Killi) and finding the start of your proposed route. I'd love to go back, but would need a few more details/particulars before committing to, as you say, going half way around the world.
Germsauce.....the high point of Mt. Kenya is Batian. Lenana is a walk up and significantly lower.

Benjamin, I'm not too sure on the exact date yet but that should play out in a few weeks I hope. As far as trip plans, I am looking to do a technical climb up to the top. I realize it can be mostly hiked and scrammbled up but I would much rather get in some technical pitches. I would also like to traverse over to get both the Batian and Nelion peaks. wufpak18
