Register with the NP Mountaineering Headquarters in Talkeetna, AK before climbing in the park!

Description

Not nearly as popular or crowded as the West Butt, the lower altitude and steep rock and ice aspects make this an Alpinist's dream. Summit rate is <40% due to weather and deep snow conditions on the upper mountain. Also no permits or advanced registration required!

Getting There

Highly dependent on the intended route. Most popular are the North Face routes and West Ridge which are both a short ski from the KIA. The Northeast face is reached from the Tokositna or one of the eastern forks of the Kahiltna . Alpinist 9 features the mountain with photos of route outlines.

Deprivation AI5-6 M6 R  AK : Denali National Park : Mt Hunter
In '94, on the right side of the North Buttress, Scott Backes and Mark Twight looked for weaknesses in the wall where they could move quickly. Meanwhile, Greg Child and Michael Kennedy worked their way up the Wall of Shadows on the blankest sections of the buttress. In the end both teams sent their new routes with different tactics but good efforts all around. The F.A. of Deprivation required a 72 hour push with descent via the West ridge. They decided to forego the summit after apparently tr...[more]   Browse More Classics in AK
