Motorboat Rock is the large boulder that sits at the entrance of the Echo Canyon climbing area. There are a number of short climbs that range from 5.6 to 5.12 a/b X. Most have top anchors that can be accessed easily from a gully on the corner closest to Throne Rock. This area is very popular with guided groups and first time climbers. Expect it to be mobbed with ropes hanging off nearly every climb on busy days.

Getting There

Motorboat is hard to miss. From the base of Echo Canyon, follow the purple climberís trail up a set of steps. Motorboat Rock is the first formation at the top of the steps. Beginnerís Bitch is the first climb you encounter with the gully used to set up top ropes just to the right.

Some slabby face moves lead to a powerful undercling, then a BIG reach or deadpoint to the base of a beautiful, but short, arching fingercrack layback flake. This route got an X in the original guidebook, although the crux is pretty protectable. The techy smears in the upper half make it a pretty heady lead, though....[more]   Browse More Classics in TX
