advise on modifying them to leshless?

I did this to my Black Prophets, and it works great! I also dipped the cut & filed rope thimbles in plasti-dip before mounting them.

T dog,
I actually took the grip rests for the old vipers or the first series viper's and modified them to fit on my cobra's. the seem to work okay. kept me from smashing my fingers.

Ditto that. Razor knife and a bit of patience. Really easy to do.
