hey so Im going up to the aspen valley in a few weeks for my GFs birthday and she wants to go ice climbing and she has never gone. i am looking for some good single pitch ice that is suitable for TR. I know of only Hays Creek Falls is their anything similar and/or closer to Aspen? I have read about Aspen Expeditions going some place about 10 minute outside of the valley where is this? they haven't been answering my calls.

You're talking about the airport ice off the Rio Grande Trail. It's about 10 minutes from Aspen driving, and you can get there by one of two ways... either park at the Airport Business Center (if going towards Aspen, make a left at the airport stoplight and go straight back, through a stop sign and park by a commercial building straight ahead - there's a trail that goes towards the river, crosses a bridge, then makes a left on the Rio Grande. About a 10 minute walk), or go down Cemetery Lane, cross the river and park in the lot on the left, then head downriver on the Rio Grande Trail for about 15 minutes).

The airport ice is pretty small, and definitely not a destination climb. You can either lead or solo it, though it can be thin at the top, or hike around and tr off some small trees.

If you're still around, I'm a former guide looking to swing some tools (as a partner) on some moderates in Redstone this Sunday 1/19/14…

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
