Heylo, I'm looking for info on good moderate climbs and walls in El Salto Mexico. Any leads? Most the stuff I see on the net is for the harder stuff.

Thanks!

Hi Wylie,

There are soo many moderates at El Potrero Chico that you could spend weeks climbing different great routes. BUT... El Salto is a different story. There are maybe three routes I can think of at El Salto that are below 5.12,,, and they are 5.11s. Amazing rock and location though! Let me know if you have any more specific questions. Good luck!

I want my good friend to join the trip but his partner is a very casual climber and not into steep sport climbing. I really want them to come but don't think I'll be able to talk them into it unless there's chiller climbing to be had. I know PC has lots but we're going to El Salto. I've found info on 2 different walls with climbs from 5.7 to 5.10. I'm guessing there's moderate stuff down there.

Hey Wylie,
I know at La Boca, one of the crags at Salto, there are at least 5 climbs that are ten or easier. There is a nice wall on the opposite side of the canyon at la Boca (40 yards) that has a few warmups (10,11)
There is also a super classic 10 at the Tecolote Cave, but getting there can be a bit of a bitch and maybe not worth one pitch.
Cant even begin to compare to Potrero for moderate climbing though.

Cool. Thanks! The more info I can get on moderates the higher chance I have of getting my friend to join us. How far is the drive from El Salto to El Potrero?

There are these two routes on Las Animas. There are also a couple on the wall just before you get to Las Animas. It's about 2.5 hours from Potrero to El Salto

Here is a 5.7 in the entrance I bolted. Definitely better quality moderates in Potrero, but there is more and more moderates going up in El Salto.

And how much ground clearance is needed to access el salto? I understand you need a fairly burly vehicle to drive all the way. I am willing to walk, but would prefer not to hike miles every day. Will I be able to get close enough in my Toyota Sienna minivan?

The hike into El Salto from the town is very mild. High clearance is only necessary if you want to drive all the way down the river bed and car camp closer to the wall. From Kikas to Las Animas wall on foot is no more than 20-30 minutes...
