i was wondering if any one in minnesota has made the trip up to the thunder bay area for rock climbing.

i live about 9 hours away and was thinking about going there this summer but am wondering if it would be worth the trip. there isnt much info on this site about that area and rc.com has a little info. so if anyone could tell me something good about the area or tell me where i could find more info that would be wonderful.

From what i have found it looks pretty awesome.

I will be making my first trek north for the rock this summer, but have been climbing ice up there a lot. You should go, it will be worth your time!

I remember a trip some friends of mine from Duluth took up there about 10 years ago. We were all recently 19 so it was more of a drinking trip than a climbing trip, but we did get on some pretty good stuff. I don't remember any details other than it was a blast.

Loads of climbing up this way. Multiple areas within the city itself, most with between 10 and 70-some-odd climbs ranging from 30 to 100+ feet. 5.5 through to 5.12's. If you do plan on driving so far for a rock trip, I'd suggest picking up a copy of Lake Superior Region Rock Guide before you come, or you can pick one up here at a store called Wilerness Supply Company.

While Silver Harbor is a popular one, it likely doesn't see as much use as 'The Bluffs'. There are also nice areas just south of town and out near pass lake and/or sleeping giant park.

Not too much in the way of Sport climbing at many of these areas, some nice trad routes, and good top ropes.
